Role of Ultrasonography in Evaluation of Oral Submucous Fibrosis

چکیده
Introduction: Oral Submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is well recognized as one of the most common potentially malignant disorder of the oral mucosa in India related to chewing of areca nut products and characterized by mucosal rigidity of varying intensity caused by fibroelastic changes of the juxta – epithelial layer, resulting in a progressive inability to open the mouth. Ultrasonography (USG) is a non-invasive diagnostic modality commonly used for soft tissue pathology. It is considered as a form of “real time” imaging. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonography (USG) as a non invasive tool in assessing the severity of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF). Materials and Methods: The submucosal thickness in buccal mucosa was measured using ultrasound (6-13 MHz) in 50 subjects comprising 25 OSMF cases and 25 controls. Results: Results were analysed by one way analysis of variance, chi-square test, Pearson correlation and t-test. As the stages of OSMF advanced, an increase in submucosal thickness of the buccal mucosa was seen in case group when compared with control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: USG is an effective non-invasive modality for assessing the progression of OSMF.

Oral Submucous Fibrosis: A Chronic Deliberating Disease of Oral Cavity
Oral submucous fibrosis is chronic progressive condition of oral cavity. The condition is well recognized for its malignant potential. Usually the disease initiates with redness, blistering, and ulceration inside the mouth. It is characterized by progressive fibrosis of submucosal tissue. The pathogenesis of oral submucous fibrosis is not well understood. Betelquid chewing is the major etiologi...

We describe an interesting case of oral sub mucous fibrosis accompanied by severe trismus in a 23 years old man. The patient had initially been diagnosed as having internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint and conservative treatment had failed to decrease the symptoms. Despite extremely limited temporomandibular joint movement, cone beam computed tomography revealed no important abnor...

Abstract BACKGROUNackground and AIMD & AIM: Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSF) is an oral premalignant condition with highest premalignant potential among oral precancerous lesions which characterized with inflammation and progressive fibrosis of submucosal oral tissues (cause to significant irreversible rigidity and trismus). During the years, many classification systems have been propo...
متن کاملComparative Study of Clinical Staging of Oral Submucous Fibrosis with Qualitative Analysis of Collagen Fibres Under Polarized Microscopy
Background & Objectives: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a condition where excessive deposition of dense collagen fibers occurred in the connective tissue of oral mucosa. An alteration of collagen necessitates an in depth understanding of collagen in oral tissues as no breakthrough studies have been reported. Therefore the aim was to correlate the clinical, functional and histopathol...
